BE KIND TO YOUR SPARKLES
Jewellery is delicate and unfortunately not indestructible so it’s important to take great care with it. If something looks delicate; it is! Think about jewellery like a car: you service it at regular intervals, clean it, and when you scratch the paintwork or chip the window you ask a specialist to do the work and don’t ask the manufacturer to pay for the repair.
A light, expert hand is needed to make repairs. So even if you think you’re pretty handy, repairs to jewellery really are best performed by a professional.
To help protect the durability and high-quality of your jewellery, remove your jewellery when you shower and bathe
Take your jewellery off if you’re involved in any activity which could knock or damage it
Take it off when you go to bed
Keep it well away from chemicals, especially chlorine. If it does come into contact with chemicals, rinse it in water immediately
Apply any lotions or perfumes before you put your jewellery on. These can particularly damage stones like pearls or opals and contributes to plating wearing off more rapidly
Keep your jewellery away from extreme temperatures, humidity or sunlight.
Store it separately, ideally in a soft-lined box or case, so that your favourite pieces don’t tangle, rub or scratch one another.

M.O.T YOUR SHINY THINGS
The best news of all is that your jewellery will very rarely be beyond repair or restoration. Here’s a quick checklist of some of the things to look out for:
Worn, damaged or missing claws on settings risk losing stones
Stones loose in their setting
Loose catches and clasps or rough links on chains or bracelets
Any fractures in metals
Pearls that are loose on their thread or where the thread is frayed
Too much movement in jointed hinges
The plating wearing off white gold
A dive watch needs to be pressure tested annually
Finally, if a ring is too tight or too lose it can generally be re-sized to fit.
THE NITTY GRITTY
Of course, prevention is always better than cure, so try to get your jewellery cleaned and checked annually and consider adding safety clasps to bracelets and necklaces that don’t already have them.
Natural gemstones can be vulnerable to absorbing dirt and to chipping. Settings may also become loose over-time so be vigilant.
All plating and polishing fades due to wear and when you choose to re-plate or re-polish is personal discretion.
